History
The Destin Fire Control District began in 1961, when local community leaders in southeastern Okaloosa County organized a volunteer fire service to protect the growing Destin community. The fire service began before the City of Destin incorporated as a city, reflecting the community’s need for dedicated fire protection while Destin was still primarily known as a fishing village and developing resort area. In 1971, the Florida Legislature formally created the Destin Fire Control District by Chapter 71-787, Laws of Florida, originally identified as House Bill No. 394. The District was later amended and recreated through subsequent special acts, including Chapter 82-335 in 1982, which established the voter-approved 1.000 mill ad valorem operating cap. When the City of Destin incorporated in 1984, DFCD continued to provide fire protection within the city, the unincorporated areas, and its future annexations.
The District’s modern legal framework was established in 2000, when the Legislature passed House Bill 1487, codified as Chapter 2000-417, Laws of Florida. That act recreated and reenacted the District’s charter, confirmed its boundaries from East Pass to Walton County and from Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf, and gave DFCD authority for fire suppression, fire prevention, EMS/rescue response, fire code enforcement, hazardous-materials planning, investigations, public education, and related public-safety services.
Since its volunteer beginnings, DFCD has grown into a full-service career fire rescue agency. Its role expanded beyond fire suppression to include ALS first response, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, marine response, fire prevention/code enforcement, public education, and Beach Safety. The Beach Safety program began after a deadly drowning events in 2003 and has patrolled Destin’s beaches since 2004. DFCD added ALS to all the District’s fire apparatus in 2005 and has continued operating in that capacity to this day. Today the District operates from three stations and protects both the land based community and surrounding waterways that define Destin.
